Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology says a recent grant will fund its Homework Hotline until June 2017. Lilly Endowment Inc. gave the school $2.4 million to tutor Indiana students in math and science. August 18, 2014

News Release

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A $2.4 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. will enable Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Homework Hotline mathematics and science tutoring service to continue assisting Indiana middle- and high-school students until June of 2017.

The Homework Hotline reinforces math and science concepts, and it helps students develop better problem-solving skills.

Rose-Hulman students are available from 7-10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays this school year, except for holiday breaks. Free tutoring sessions or assistance with homework problems are available by calling 1-877-ASK-ROSE (877-275-7673) or through e-mail and online resources at www.AskRose.org.

Tutors have been trained to work with students in grades 6-12, are certified by the National Tutoring Association, and have access to state-adopted math and science textbooks.

Homework Hotline tutors answered 27,521 calls and conducted 6,887 online tutoring sessions during the 2013-14 school year. That increased the total of tutoring sessions conducted to more than 500,000 since the program’s opening in 1991.

Lilly Endowment’s grant will enable the Homework Hotline to utilize the latest technology to strengthen the service’s virtual presence and meet the changing needs of students and online learning communities. Homework Hotline leadership will also continue pursuing collaborative alliances and partnerships to increase interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) initiatives and encourage the pursuit of STEM careers.

Homework Hotline will also enhance services during the next three years and stay current with the technological resources being used to teach math and science concepts in Indiana classrooms. A new School Ambassadors tutoring team will answer calls from schools adopting the balanced school-year calendar and increase Homework Hotline’s tutoring presence earlier in the school year. A second feature will enable tutors to conduct after-school tutoring sessions with schools and youth organizations through Skype.

“Lilly Endowment has been a generous supporter of the Homework Hotline for more than 15 years,” said Homework Hotline Director Susan Smith Roads. “This support has enabled us to expand our services and keep up with advancements in technology.”

Homework Hotline’s educational model has been replicated at other colleges and universities throughout the country. In 2013, the hotline was adopted by the University of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, after being featured by Harvey Mudd College to help elementary and secondary school students in the Claremont, California area. Other colleges are also considering adapting aspects of the hotline for their communities.
