Holy Cross College breaks ground on athletic complex expansion; residence hall next

Officials at Holy Cross College have broken ground on the first phase of a multiyear expansion of its Athletic Complex, and plans are set to begin work on a new residence hall project.
The Athletic Complex project will focus on the college’s soccer stadium and include a new lighting system to support night games and community programs.
Holy Cross declined to disclose its investment in the expansion or how many phases are involved. However, the college did note that it received financial support from multiple benefactors, including the South Bend-based 1st Source Foundation.
The first phase of the project will also include a new electronic scoreboard with an integrated speaker system, as well as a new chain link fence surrounding the field.
“This initial phase includes several exciting upgrades to the soccer field that will significantly enhance the student-athlete experience, allow for added intramural opportunities, and improve the game-day atmosphere,” Director of Athletics Robert Pastoor said in a news release. “These additions reflect our commitment to creating vibrant spaces where students, families, alumni, and friends can gather, cheer, and celebrate together.”
The project is expected to be complete this fall. Holy Cross did not indicate when any future phases would begin.
“This new space will undoubtedly become a hub of energy, sportsmanship, and community, a place where students grow in excellence and purpose and enjoy,” said President Marco Clark.
The groundbreaking for the soccer field project took place May 1. Exactly one week later, the college will break ground on a $12 million residential complex—the first new on-campus housing at Holy Cross in a decade.
The three-story, 29,000-square-foot building will feature 114 beds, as well as social rooms, kitchens and community space on each floor. It will also include study and reading lounges, a chapel, and outdoor seating, the college said.
Clark said the groundbreaking means more than just the beginning of construction.
“It’s a powerful sign that Holy Cross is growing and thriving,” he said. “Following our largest incoming class ever and record-breaking financial support, this new residence hall strengthens our mission to form innovative scholars, courageous citizens, virtuous leaders, and hopeful and passionate disciples while providing them with a transformative student experience in a vibrant on-campus community.”
The residence hall project is slated for completion ahead of the 2026-27 academic year.
