Holcomb to Launch Prison Coding Program

"The Last Mile" launched at California's San Quentin State Prison in 2014.

Governor Eric Holcomb will Tuesday detail a pilot program to teach prison inmates coding ahead of their release. Indiana will become the first state outside of California to adopt the program, known as The Last Mile, which aims to align inmates with gainful employment upon release.

Indiana will first begin training women how to code at the Indiana Women’s Prison as part of the pilot. Holcomb will have more details Tuesday alongside the program’s founder, Chris Redlitz, and co-founder and program graduate Kenyatta Leal.

The Last Mile debuted in 2014 at San Quentin State Prison in California. Holcomb first announced plans to bring the program to Indiana last month.

Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Robert Carter will also be on hand for Tuesday’s announcement, which is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Smash Social in downtown Indianapolis.
