Subscribe NowGovernor Eric Holcomb is requesting a federal disaster declaration for nine counties and individual assistance for another 27 counties in the wake of flooding that took place February 14 through March 4. The letter follows joint preliminary assessments by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency that Holcomb says showed damage to homes, businesses, utilities and infrastructure "has been significant and, in many areas, catastrophic."
FEMA estimates individual damages were higher than $19 million. More than 1,800 homes were either destroyed, damaged or affected by the flooding. Individual assistance approval would clear the way for grants, temporary housing and U.S. Small Business Administration loans. If approved for public assistance, state and local responders could be reimbursed for actions including emergency protective measures, debris removal, road repairs and some personnel costs.
