Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the $12 million project will turn the facility into a meeting and conference space.
The effort is part of a $22 million effort by the park service to restore historic properties using funding from the Great American Outdoors Act, which was enacted in 2020.
Work on the lodge’s restoration began in 2024 and is expected to be completed in late 2025, according to Indiana Dunes National Park Superintendent Jason Taylor. When work is finished, the lodge is expected to be open to the public every day.
He said the restoration effort also involves other buildings that were part of the Camp Good Fellow campsite.
“Several iconic structures, several cultural resources like deep history cultural resources in the park are being rehabilitated right now,” Taylor told The Times. “We have a $22 million investment from the Great American Outdoors Act to restore these structures. There’s full rehabilitation for one and partial for the other two.”
Taylor said the park is still looking at ways to fund the purchase of new furniture for the lodge, noting that one person has offered to donate a small collection of historic furniture. He said a call for donations might also be made.
