An 800,000-square-foot Amazon Fulfillment Center was supposed to open in Elkhart two years ago, but has sat idle since that time.
But our partners at WSBT-TV report residents have received flyers in the mail noting future job opportunities, hinting that the facility could soon be opening.
Amazon first announced plans for the fulfillment center in October 2021, saying it—along with an 180,000-square-foot delivery station—could bring 1,000 jobs to the area.
Company officials told WSBT that job advertisements like the mailers residents received are part of its standard hiring process, which begins a few months before a new facility opens. However, the company noted that there is no specific timeline for the Elkhart facility to open.
“The facility is progressing according to schedule, and hiring letters are a standard step in our preparations for all Amazon facility launches,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “We plan to share additional information as it becomes available.”
WSBT said Amazon declined to provide further details about plans for the Elkhart facility.
