HANOVER, Ind. – Hanover College President Sue DeWine announced at the April 5 meeting of the College's Board of Trustees her intention to retire June 30, 2015, following her eighth year as president of Indiana's oldest four-year college. DeWine is the 15th president in Hanover's 187-year history and only the sixth since 1879.
“In a few short years, Sue DeWine was able to make Hanover College an exciting place of higher education,” said Hanover board chair Phillip D. Scott. “The attitude on campus is remarkably positive, and the future of the college is bright. She led us through challenging times and will leave a lasting legacy of growth and enthusiasm. Sue is a remarkable person and Hanover owes her a deep debt of gratitude.”
“I think the timing is right for me to retire as we will celebrate the end of a successful capital campaign this fall and have successfully implemented initiatives from our strategic plan,” said DeWine. “It's time for new leadership to implement the many ideas in development that will continue to chart Hanover's future.”
During DeWine's tenure, freshman enrollment increased by 40 percent, student diversity soared to 15 percent, international students increased to more than four percent and overall enrollment climbed to more than 1,160 – a 20 percent increase since her inauguration.
DeWine was also instrumental in the success of the college's Live Our Loyalty Campaign, launched in July 2010, which has raised more than $26 million. Among the capital improvements funded by this effort are a new outdoor athletic complex and new residence hall, both slated for completion this fall. Completed projects include a new student activity center as well as major renovations to the dining hall and the learning center.
Early in DeWine's presidency, Hanover undertook an additional $10 million in capital improvements, with complete renovations to two major campus buildings, among others. With her support, the College has implemented multiple successful programs in the areas of study abroad, business, diversity, financial aid, sustainability, experiential learning and lifelong learning.
She and her husband, Mike, are the parents of two adult children.
