Tom McDermott says the move, which was approved in January, was made in an effort to cut costs.
The city says, shortly after the vote to consolidate, the Hammond Police Department ceased filing criminal misdemeanors in the Hammond City Court. Beginning July 1, traffic ordinances that were previously heard at Hammond City Court will now be heard at 232 Russell Street in downtown Hammond.
Those who receive traffic citations from the Hammond Police Department will also have the ability to pay online or at public kiosks being installed in all county clerk’s offices. McDermott says, in addition to saving money, the consolidation also helps to eliminate redundancy.
The Hammond City Court will end operations completely as of January 1, 2019.
