Groundbreaking Remains Unclear for Terre Haute Casino

A time frame for construction on a new casino in Terre Haute is still up in the air. Our partners at WTHI-TV report the Indiana Gaming Commission has tabled two approvals related to the casino, including operator Lucy Luck Gaming’s financing plan for the project.
In March, Lucy Luck told the commission it had secured a financing package for the $175 million casino.
Additionally, the commission tabled the renewal of the gaming licenses for the Terre Haute casino, as well as the new Hard Rock Northern Indiana Casino in Gary. The station says the Gary casino, which opened its doors earlier this month, will continue to operate on an interim basis.
The commission said Lucy Luck had missed certain deadlines for documentation, though it did receive the management agreement with Hard Rock for the Terre Haute casino, according to WTHI.
“Licensees dictate timelines based on the submission of information. Staff continues to prioritize and dedicate significant resources towards ensuring this project moves forward for the benefit of the local community,” Sara Tait from the Indiana Gaming Commission said. “Those exercise great restraint and Lucy Luck’s status as the only applicant for the Terre Haute license is a factor in continuing to provide opportunities for achieving compliance. Since the submission of Lucy Luck’s application, there have been few steps towards the opening of an operational casino over an entire year.”
The commission said it does not need to make the approvals in order for a groundbreaking date to be set. WTHI reports the commission did acknowledge progress made by Lucy Luck over the past two months to ease its concerns surrounding the project.
The commission will meet again on June 24. When Lucy Luck detailed its financing plan in March, the company said it planned to open the casino in 2022.
