The developer says it plans to turn the former Apperson Brothers factory and surrounding property into a luxury apartment community with nearly 200 units and retail space.
The development is scheduled to open in the winter of 2018. Flaherty & Collins says it will feature 6,800 square feet of resort-style amenities, such as a heated pool with a deck and courtyard, outdoor kitchen and dining area, a fitness club and a pet walk, among others.
"We are excited to begin construction on this transformative property for Downtown Kokomo," said Austin Carmony, vice president of development for Flaherty & Collins. "We believe this project will add quality housing that supports the growing Kokomo community. This project is a major component of the continual revival of downtown. We want people to Live, Work and Play in downtown Kokomo."
Flaherty & Collins says it expects about 70 percent of the residents to come from outside of Howard County. The developer hopes to attract those who commute to downtown Kokomo due to the lack of housing options.
The 110-year-old Apperson building housed the Apperson Automobile Co. until 1926 and was then used as an industrial supply store and warehouse until its closing in 2007.
