INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Green BEAN Delivery, the Midwest's largest online natural and organic grocery delivery service, is set to begin serving Kokomo in the coming weeks.

Green BEAN previously delivered to the Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Muncie, Anderson and Pendleton areas, but will add a service to Kokomo as it sprawls out to other areas within the state.

“Kokomo has always been a city on our radar,” Green BEAN vice president John Freeland said. “We're very focused on not only serving greater metropolitan areas, but finding ways to reach into surrounding communities and provide access to these healthy foods within those communities as well as the larger metropolitan areas. We decided long ago that there's a lot of different hang-ups and excuses that can get thrown into the mix if you don't take it as far as we have, which is all the way to your doorstep. Short of us walking in and firing up the stove and putting the broccoli and chicken in the skillet for you, we're really just trying to take away all the things that inherently get in the way and block people from participating in this type of movement.”

The delivery service is open to all Kokomo residents within the delivery area. From its website, Green BEAN Delivery's customers can select a produce bin size of their choice and delivery frequency, such as weekly or bi-weekly. Nearly 70 offerings donned its Indiana website Tuesday.

The company is also partnering with the Delphi LiveWell program at Delphi Electronics to facilitate an additional delivery area expansion.

“The support from Delphi has given us the ability to open our virtual doors to the Kokomo community and help Delphi employees improve their overall wellness,” said Shane Towne, president of BEAN. “We are very excited about our new partnership with Delphi and look forward to a long and fruitful campaign of encouraging better health through diet, while supporting local and regional economies.”

The partnership with Delphi is not the first of its kind. To encourage a community-based approach to health and wellness in the workplace, Green BEAN Delivery has partnered with more than 100 companies, including OneAmerica, Butler University, and Little Red Door Cancer Agency.

Green BEAN Delivery is the latest option offered to Delphi employees, helping them and their families to improve their health and make healthier food choices easier to obtain.

The BEAN portion of Green BEAN Delivery's name stands for the acronym Biodynamic, Education, Agriculture, Nutrition.

A family-owned and operated company, Matt Ewer and Elizabeth Blessing started the company in 2007 in Indianapolis as a way to bring organic products to the doorsteps of their customers. They now serve customers in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Missouri.

“We've boot-strapped and built everything we have from the ground up,” Freeland said. “We've remained independent throughout that whole process. We set out to build a company that can create a sustainable, long-term food system for communities that allows for easy access and ordering on the online platform. Going to their door was a big piece for us, changing the game in how people think about purchasing food and groceries in general.”

Each produce bin is customizable, and customers can add local dairy, meats, bread and other grocery products to each order. All products are said to be all-natural and free of additives and preservatives.

According to its website, Green BEAN sources its produce from local farmers whenever possible. During the spring, summer and fall months, customers will see local produce options, while during the colder months, Green BEAN works with farmers primarily within the United States to provide patrons with the freshest produce possible. Products, such as mangoes, bananas and pineapples are the most common products brought in from outside the U.S.

“It's honestly the foundation, the entire reason we set out to build this company,” Freeland said. “It's an opportunity to put a food system in place that fosters the success of and really helps those mid- and small-sized family farms and local artisans reach some potential and scalability. It truly is our mission and our goal to make local and healthy foods more affordable, convenient and accessible to all communities.”

Local residents may pre-register for the service at, where they will receive $15 off their first order. Potential customers are encouraged to show their interest in particular products before the delivery service begins in the coming weeks.
