The mayor of Greenwood believes a $90 million development planned near I-65 will succeed even though previous major projects in and around the location have not. Mark Myers says the proposal from Gershman Partners is different than failed efforts like a Cabela’s store and a $22 million sports village, because the Indianapolis-based developer has a good track record and a "vested interest" in central Indiana. Plans for Greenwood Town Center include 700,000 square-feet of retail, dining and entertainment space that could open in fall of 2017.
Myers characterizes the proposal as a "large jump" from anything else that has ever been planned for the location. He says it’s one of the larger investments into the city. Further, Myers says the property is going to enhance the quality of life overall in Greenwood and showcase the city to the existing and prospective business community.
Myers says the city plans to pump "a couple million dollars" into the project for infrastructure-related work, which shows outside developers investigating the area that the city is "not afraid to invest."
Gershman has developed high-profile projects including the 655,000 square-foot Hamilton Town Center in Noblesville and the 65 acre Bridges in Carmel. Its portfolio also includes the 540,000 square-foot Lloyd Crossing retail hub in Evansville, the 52,000 square-foot Marrott office space in Indy’s Mass Ave District and Carmel’s 193-unit, 6-acre Penn Circle development.
Construction in Greenwood is planned for next year.
