Greenwood Considered For Amazon Facility

The city of Greenwood is being considered for a major distribution project from Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN). Our partners at the Daily Journal report the city has approved $7 million in tax abatements if Amazon brings an $80 million "receive center," which would create 1,250 full-time jobs, to the city.

The 615,000-square-foot facility would be build on the site of a proposed FedEx distribution center, plans for which were ultimately scrapped earlier this year. Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers says plans are not official yet as Amazon is also considering another city for the project.

The Greenwood City Council approved Monday two 10-year tax abatements for the project. Amazon plans to invest $45 million in real property improvements and $35 million in equipment, according to the publication.

Last month, the city detailed plans for the project but did not name the company at the time. 

Ryan Wilson, economic development manager for Amazon, told city council members the lease for the project is longer than the abatements, which means the company would have maintain a lengthy presence in Greenwood. The lease, however, has not yet been signed.
