Greenleaf Foods SPC has announced plans to pump more than $300 million into building what it says will be North America’s largest plant-based protein manufacturing facility in Shelbyville. The company, which is a subsidiary of Canada-based Maple Leaf Foods Inc., says the plant will result in 460 new jobs. Greenleaf says the facility will more than double its production capacity for brands including Lifghtlife and Field Roast Grain Meat Co. to meet what it calls "surging consumer demand."

The company expects the $310 million facility to become operational in late 2020. President Dan Curtin says the plant will be "a center of plant-based protein excellence that helps accelerate our company’s growth." 

Greenleaf says the 57-acre property will allow for future market growth. The company also has facilities in Seattle, Washington and Turners Falls, Massachusetts. It is planning to invest in equipment to increase capacity at those existing facilities as well.

Governor Eric Holcomb calls the announcement "a significant milestone for the Shelbyville community and the state of Indiana." Holcomb and Shelbyville Mayor Tom DeBaun will take part this afternoon in a groundbreaking on the site at the intersection of I-74 and Highway 44 in Shelbyville.
