Greenville’s Techshot Preps For Another Space Mission

Subscribe NowEquipment from Greenville-based Techshot Inc. is once again set to be used to conduct experiments in space. The high-tech Floyd County company’s ADvanced Space Experiment Processor device will contain medical research equipment that can provide nutrients and mechanical stress for manufactured organs and tissue so they are viable for transplantation when returned to Earth. The payload will be part of this weekend’s SpaceX launch from Cape Canaveral to the International Space Station.

During an interview with Inside INdiana Business Life Sciences Reporter Kylie Veleta, Techshot Vice President Rich Boling described the preparations taking place before Sunday’s scheduled launch. The space capsule will contain a culture vessel with muscle tissue that was bioprinted prior to launch and during the mission.
Two chambers of the processor will be dedicated to studies being conducted by a Texas Heart Institute and Baylor College of Medicine collaboration they say could improve cell growth and development and 3D tissue formation, which could lead to advancements in translational disease treatment. The third chamber will help further development of another Techshot innovation, the BioFabrication Facility, which is a 3D bioprinter expected to be used on the ISS late next year.
