Indianapolis, Ind. — United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) is awarding more than $800,000 to help two local human care agencies with capital renovation projects to expand services. The grants are over and above United Way allocations for programs and administration.
Children's Bureau Inc. is receiving $700,000 to renovate the Rachel Glick Courage Center at 2115 N. Central Avenue. The renovations will more than double the capacity to serve youth ages 10-17 who suffer from childhood trauma, making treatment possible for 50-60 youth a year. The total cost of the project, to be complete by the end of February 2015, is estimated at $1.5 million.
The Damien Center Inc. is receiving $100,050 to renovate their 26 N. Arsenal facility. The grant will help with costs to create a medical clinic that will be operated by IU Health. The renovation aligns with new national strategies that integrate medical treatment with supportive services to achieve measurable results in HIV/AIDS response. To be complete by February 2015, the project will also add offices to expand mental health/substance abuse counseling and housing case management.
In December, Lilly Endowment Inc. awarded a $10 million grant to United Way of Central Indiana to continue the capital projects program UWCI manages on behalf of the region's human care system. The Endowment’s support for United Way's Capital Projects Fund, established in 2000, now totals $137.5 million.
Since December 2000, the Capital Projects Fund has enabled United Way to invest in 136 projects for 70 agencies. For every $1 United Way invested in such projects, the funds helped generate another $2 in broader community support for a total impact of nearly $300 million in renovations, new construction and purchases, according to United Way.
