The university says the funding will allow WIPB-TV to work with community partners to provide science and literacy resources for young people in underserved areas.
Ball State says WIPB will focus its efforts on the South Central and Thomas Park/Avondale neighborhoods in Muncie. The station will work with organizations in the 8twelve Coalition to incorporate the new PBS KIDS science and literacy-based programming, mobile apps and digital games.
The station’s work will include training for facilitators and caregivers regarding best practices to engage families and children in learning together, as well as various free workshops and camps for families at partner locations such as the Ross Community Center, South View Elementary School, and Maring-Hunt Library.
WIPB is one of 14 public media stations throughout the country to receive a Community Collaboratives for Early Learning and Media grant this year.
