GM Plant Parking Lot Redevelopment On Track
A deal to transform a former General Motors plant parking lot into athletic fields and facilities is moving forward. The Michigan-based RACER Trust has completed the sale of six acres at the old GM Manual Transmission property in Muncie to Ross Community Center Inc.
RACER Trust took ownership of the grounds in 2011, following GM’s bankruptcy. The trust says more than 60 acres are still available for redevelopment.
Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler says "this is great news for the City of Muncie. I am thrilled for the families of the Southside and especially the Thomas Park/Avondale neighborhood. This is the kind of investment that has profoundly positive impacts on the entire city. Individuals and companies evaluate quality of life when making investment decisions, and a community’s recreational opportunities speak volumes."
The design phase could begin this month and construction is expected to get underway mid-year.
Plans for the property include baseball fields and other facilities. The land sits next to the current community center, which was founded in 1974.and focuses on youth sports and enrichment programming.
