Gary’s Bowman Academy Gets New Charter

The Indiana State Board of Education has approved Trine University as the new authorizing charter for Thea Bowman Leadership Academy in Gary. Earlier this year, Ball State University announced it would not renew the school’s charter.

The school says its mission is to become a "world-class model for high performance urban schools." It serves about 1,400 K-12 students. 

In January, Ball State said the school was out of compliance of "various requirements pertaining to federal and state laws." At the time, Principal Sarita Stevens said the academy outperforms nearly "every other charter school academically."
