Representatives from the National Main Street Center Inc. are in Gary for a site visit regarding the city’s involvement in a national redevelopment program. Gary is one of seven cities chosen for the "Main Street Refresh" initiative.
The program offers what officials say is a "refreshed approach to comprehensive community revitalization and preservation-based economic development." Gary was selected in a competitive process and will receive 12 to 18 months of free organizational capacity building and technical assistance from expert in community revitalization efforts, long-term strategic planning and measuring results.
The other communities involved are: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Milledgeville, Georgia; Biloxi, Mississippi; Detroit, Michigan; Lexington, Kentucky and Miami, Florida.
Officials from the organization will be in Gary Wednesday and Thursday.
