Gary Vet Housing, Training Development Open

The Thursday event included Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb and U.S. Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald.
McDonald is a Gary native and Holcomb is a U.S. Navy vet.
NWI Veterans Village is a three-story, 67,000 square-foot facility. It offers housing, support and job services, as well as on-site culinary arts training opportunities for vets.
The project was funded through city and Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority funds and built by a team led by the Broadway Area Community Development Corp. Partnership include NWI Continuum of Care, the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago and the Corporation For Supportive Housing initiative. It includes 44 units, as well as computer, exercise, community and commercial kitchen facilities, a rooftop patio, walking trail and administrative offices.
Construction took two years and was complete at the end of 2015.
