The Gary Community School Corp. says it will start the school year virtually with no specific date when in-person learning will resume.
Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report Gary Schools Emergency Manager Paige McNulty made the decision after a review of coronavirus positivity rates.
McNulty said Wednesday as soon as numbers go down in the city, students will return.
She said the district will now shift its attention to offering robust elearning resources.
The publication reports more than 80% of parents, teachers and community members responded in recent Gary Community School Corp. surveys that they are in favor of maintaining an online platform for the time being.
The first day of classes is August 12.
