News Release

GARY, Ind. – The Gary/Chicago International Airport is working in partnership with the City of Gary, Aviation Facilities Company (AFCO) and AvPORTS on hosting a Northwest Indiana Career Day Symposium to get students thinking and preparing for future career goals, as well as presenting the multitude of options in the transportation and aviation industries.

The symposium – which is a first for the airport team – will be held at the Genesis Convention Center in Gary on Saturday, December 13th. The event will give students the opportunity to engage with regional employers, higher education institutions, workforce development agencies, trade unions, and apprenticeship programs to explore options and opportunities after high school. All high school students in Northwest Indiana are invited to attend in the Exhibit Hall of the Genesis Center from 10:00AM to 4:00PM.

In addition to the Exhibit Hall, the organizing team has engaged local school officials to identify a group of students from across Lake County to participate in a series of workshops throughout the day. These workshops will focus on critical career development skills including building a winning resume and excelling in a job interview. Volunteers from various public and private organizations are partnering with AFCO and AvPORTS to lead these workshops to provide the most impactful day possible for participating students.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with the Airport and the City on this initiative to benefit the students of Northwest Indiana,” said AFCO President & CEO Chuck Stipancic. “The symposium allows us to begin to train, cultivate, and retain the future talent pool throughout Northwest Indiana.”

The Student Symposium provides an opportunity to expand students’ potential career options in the aviation industry as well as other ground occupations. It prepares students to consider all of the elements connected to the field including international relations, security, environmental studies and other entrepreneurial services beyond traditional aviation-related fields.

“This event allows the Airport to reach out into the community and engage students in considering career paths throughout the transportation industry,” said Airport Board Authority Commissioner Denise Dillard. “As students prepare to enter the local workforce or begin a path in higher education, the Airport is committed to providing them with a strong understanding of the many industries in the transportation field and to attracting talent for the opportunities of the future.”

The event is a result of ongoing workforce development initiatives stemming from the historic public-private partnership signed in early 2014 between the City of Gary, Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority, and private partners AFCO and AvPORTS.
