Gary Mayor Eddie Melton has joined a commission of municipal leaders in the U.S. and Canada working toward regional economic development and water protection.
The Mayors Commission on Economic Transformation aims to promote economic development across the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River regions while working to safeguard freshwater resources, according to a news release from the mayor’s office.
The commission is part of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, a binational coalition of more than 244 municipal and regional officials representing a region that provides drinking water for 40 million people.
“I am proud to work closely with the Cities Initiative and with my colleagues across the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Region to bolster clean economic development here in Gary,” Melton said in the news release. “Encouraging clean industries to invest in our city creates jobs, drives sustainable economic growth, and makes our region more competitive.”
The commission is led by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson; Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante; Duluth, Minnesota, Mayor Roger Reinert; Quebec City Mayor Bruno Marchand; Racine, Wisconsin, Mayor Cory Mason; and Cobourg, Ontario, Mayor Lucas Cleveland.
The commission is developing a 10-year action plan for the region’s industry, energy, transportation and waterfront sectors, which is expected to be released in September.
