Free Flight Championship Coming to Orange County

The Muncie-based Academy of Model Aeronautics will next week host the 2018 FAI F1D World Championship for Free Flight Indoor Model Aircraft. The event, which runs Sunday through Thursday, will take place at the West Baden Springs Hotel in French Lick.
Teams from 14 countries will be on hand for the competition, which features small model aircraft inside the 200-foot-span atrium at the hotel. The competitors will attempt the longest flights possible with their rubber-powered aircraft.
The World Championship event has been held every other year since 1961. The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, which promotes the event, was formed in 1905 and governs various styles of air sports, including aeromodelling, ballooning, general aviation, gliding and astronautics records.
