Subscribe NowAmerican Banker magazine has released its annual ranking of the Best Banks to Work For and four Indiana institutions are included. The trade publication says the results are based on employee surveys, reviews of employee benefits and policies and an examination of the bank’s hiring and retention strategies.
The list includes the top 90 banks, regardless of size and assets. The number of Indiana banks on the list increased from three on the 2021 list.
Merrillville-based Centier Bank is the highest ranked Hoosier bank, coming in at number seven. It’s followed by Fishers-based First Internet Bank at number 54, Horizon Bank in Michigan City at number 70, and First Merchants in Muncie at 82. First Merchants did not appear on last year’s list.
The publication noted Centier’s “servant heart culture,” which means serving customers and communities in the most selfless way possible. It also recognized the bank’s nontraditional benefits meant to help employees’ holistic wellbeing.
“It is heartwarming to know that Centier associates feel valued and taken care of, which motivates them to come to work each day and give our clients the best banking experiences possible,” Chrisanne Christ, senior partner in human resource development. “We genuinely hope each of our associates thrive and flourish while they are working for Centier Bank—and we aim to pave the way for continued growth and expansion for everyone–professionally and personally.”
The list is based on the results of two surveys. One measures employee satisfaction in eight different categories, including communication, happiness with role and relationship with supervisor. The second survey examines the policies and employee benefits of each institution.
This year, the publication took a closer look at career advancement opportunities and bank leadership.
“The banks recognized on this list are trying hard to create workplaces that employees want to join,” said Chana Schoenberger, editor-in-chief of American Banker. “Especially during this moment when companies are experiencing a shift in how, where, and how much employees work, banks are paying attention to how they can best retain their people.”
The top-ranked bank is Oakworth Capital in Birmingham, AL. It also earned top honors in 2021.
