The owner of the state’s newest coworking space believes the concept is "where business is going." Laura Cardwell says the ultimate goal of The HuB Downtown is to build community and create networks among entrepreneurs and business owners of all sizes in Kokomo. The HuB is part of a series of major changes in the city’s downtown including a new YMCA, restaurants, apartments and the multi-sport Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
Cardwell, who runs Cardwell Built Construction with her husband and previously served as a realtor, says she wouldn’t have even considered locating where she did a couple of years ago. "The change has been so dramatic over the last three years, that we wanted on-board, we wanted a piece of that, we wanted to be able to offer something to our community and this was where we felt we best fit in."
Cardwell did her research before moving forward with her space and found "some of the coolest, most open people I have come across in business." She said "oftentimes people are afraid to share their ideas, afraid somebody is going to take their idea or take what’s making them work, making them popular, and the coworking community has just been arms wide open to us." Cardwell told Inside INdiana Business owners and mangers of spaces of all sizes offered advice in areas where she found herself "out of water."
The HuB will host discussions focusing on the many aspects of business and entrepreneurship called the "Launching Impact Series." Cardwell says she has also been in contact with Kokomo High School in an effort to work with students interested in business through the school’s CEO program, which began in 2014.
Cardwell believes over the next few years, more jobs will continue to be mobile and the increasing availability of collaborative, more multi-functional spaces will keep trending higher.
The HuB is the city’s second coworking space. The first opened last year in Inventrek Technology Park.
