Fort Wayne Seeks Proposals for New Development

The city of Fort Wayne is looking for ways to convert a mostly vacant 23-acre tract of land into a multiuse development on the southeast side of the city.
The Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission this week voted to accept the transfer of the property from the city. It is now accepting proposals for the property located near Plaza Drive and McKinnie Avenue.
Currently, a 44-unit apartment building sits on a portion of the property. The remainder of the property once housed the McMillen Park apartments, a complex the city said was blighted.
Using funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the city purchased the property in 2010 and demolished the apartments.
“This property presents an opportunity for an exceptional development that will act as a catalyst for community and economic growth,” said Nancy Townsend, Community Development Director. “It’s located in one of the key areas for revitalization noted in the Southeast Strategy 2020 and we intend to deliver a high-quality project that will be an asset to the community.”
The commission is looking for a development that delivers a diversity of housing types to a range of income levels. It also wants the property to attract commercial and retail opportunities.
Proposals are due in January.
