Fort Wayne International Airport has announced new service to the New York City metropolitan area. Beginning September 7, United Airlines will offer nonstop flights to Newark Liberty International Airport.

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority says the community has been trying to secure air service to the east coast for years. The organization says the new service to New York will add efficiency for travelers.

"As a region Northeast Indiana sought service to a large hub on the East Coast of the United States and this new service to Newark is the direct result of the collaboration, positivity and perseverance that our community embodies," said Scott Hinderman, executive director of airports. "By bringing this route to our market United Airlines is providing FWA with a direct connection to New York City, increasing the speed of business in Fort Wayne."

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry says the addition will a tremendous benefit for the region, making it more competitive for businesses and residents.
