A vacant food warehouse in Westville that has been closed for more than two years could soon have new life. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the LaPorte County Council has approved a five-year tax abatement for Missouri-based NorthPoint Development’s proposed $24 million renovation of the 680,000-square-foot facility.
The building was previously occupied by Michigan-based SpartanNash Co. (Nasdaq: SPTN) before closing in 2016. Angela Harshbarger says the approval allows the company to focus on purchasing the building.
Harshbarger says the goal is to begin work on the facility by mid-November and be complete by early June. Renovation work is expected to include major repairs to the roof and parking lot, according to the publication.
The company says it does not have a tenant lined up for the facility, but projects the effort could ultimately bring 125 jobs that pay between $15 and $25 per hour. NorthPoint hopes to have a food distribution tenant committed to moving in before or shortly after the renovation work is completed.
NorthPoint operates numerous facilities throughout the country. Some of its nearly 200 tenants include General Motors, Amazon and Caterpillar.
