Merrillville-based NiSource Inc. (NYSE: NI) says Deborah Hersman has joined its board of directors. Hersman is a former chair of the National Transportation Safety Board and chief executive officer of the National Safety Council.
Hersman currently serves as chief safety officer of Waymo LLC, the self-driving car technology subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOGL), the parent company of Google. She will serve on the board’s Environmental Safety & Sustainability Committee.
"Deborah is a widely respected safety expert who has spent her career successfully promoting public safety and saving lives," NiSource Chairman Kevin Kabat said in a news release. "Given that safety is our top priority at NiSource and we are implementing a number of new pipeline safety initiatives, her insights and strong experience will be of great value to the board and senior management."
Hersman was appointed to the NTSB in 2004 by President George W. Bush. She was named chairman by President Barack Obama in 2009, a role she held until 2014.
