Now known as Casa del Libri, the development in the Elston Grove Historic Neighborhood features five luxury apartments.
The library building, made from Indiana limestone, originally opened to the public in 1897. The original construction cost was $30,000, according to Economic Development Corp. Michigan City, which equates to more than $1.1 million today.
Developers did not immediately disclose the financial investment in the renovation project.
“I think the biggest impact of the project is the fact that the library was opened to the public in 1897 as a pillar in the rich history of Michigan City. It has sat effectively vacant since the art center moved out decades ago,” Bernie DelGiorno, who spearheaded the renovation, said in a news release. “By transforming the property into residential apartments, it revitalizes a once-forgotten work of art that can now be enjoyed by full-time Michigan City residents.”
The name Casa del Libri means “house of books.” The building features a 12-foot, Tiffany-style stained glass window depicting Shakespearean figures Rosalind, Portia and Ophelia.
EDC Michigan City Executive Director Clarence Hulse says the project “encompasses a celebration of history along with a modern vibe.”
