Former IU East Chancellor Dies

The former chancellor of Indiana University East has died. David Fulton was the university’s fourth chancellor, serving from 1995 until 2007. He was 73.

Fulton began his career at IU East as an instructor of history and political science when the university was established in 1971. During his tenure, he served as assistant to then-Chancellor Alexander Schilt and director of planning and budget. He was named vice chancellor of administrative affairs and served as acting chancellor in 1986 and 1995, before being named chancellor.

"David Fulton left a lasting contribution to this community and campus through service and leadership," said Kathryn Cruz-Uribe, current chancellor of IU East. "Throughout his time at IU East, David oversaw many campus transformations, from infrastructure to academics. As a campus community, we extend our condolences to Marilyn and David’s family."

IU President Michael McRobbie presented the Indiana University President’s Medal for Excellence to Fulton in May during the university’s commencement ceremony. McRobbie called Fulton "a wonderful and dedicated servant of the IU East campus and a fine university citizen."

A public memorial celebration will be held at Vivian Auditorium on the IU East campus on a date to be determined.
