John David Engelbrecht was the chairman and former chief executive officer of South Central Inc., a radio and television broadcasting company that evolved into a diversified holding company with a national footprint. He was 68.
Engelbrecht retired as the company’s CEO in 2008 and was succeeded by his son JP. During his career, he served on the boards of directors for a variety of companies and organizations, including Citizens Bank, Vectren, Deaconess Hospital and the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Sciences.
“He was very philanthropic, in many ways quietly so,” Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke said in a statement to the Courier & Press. “He would always ask, ‘Is there anything I can do?’ He was a man who had a genuine heart to help the community.”
Engelbrecht was inducted in the Junior Achievement Evansville Business Hall of Fame and received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Eric Holcomb in 2018.
