The new owner of a decades-old former power plant in Hammond is planning a major overhaul of the property. Developer Alan Beemsterboer tells our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana he is envisioning a residential area where the State Line Energy plant now stands. Alan Beemsterboer owns Lake County-based Beemsterboer Slag Corp. and Sam Townline Development Inc.

In August, he and co-owner Simon Beemsterboer purchased the coal power facility and around half of the surrounding property.

The plant is in need of massive upgrades to stay in compliance with energy regulations and ceased operations last year.

The Times reports Alan Beemsterboer says preliminary concepts include a marina recreational boats, space for parks and lakefront residences.

Texas-based BTU Solutions Group LLC owns the largest share of the property.
