The effort has been a major focus since late last year and will bring most of the College of Health and Human Services’ seven departments, currently scattered throughout the Terre Haute campus, under one roof. In addition to an 87,000-square-foot expansion, plans call for heating, air conditioning and air quality improvements, a major interior reconfiguration and work to bring the 1960s-era facility up to access and safety standards.
The trustee approval allows the university to pay for the project with student fee replacement bonds, a method of financing that was recently approved by the Indiana General Assembly.
Officials say the bigger facility, previously called the Arena Building, will provide space for new academic programs. Existing departments within the college are:
- Advanced Practice Nursing
- Applied Health Sciences
- Applied Medicine and Rehabilitation
- Baccalaureate Nursing
- Baccalaureate Nursing Completion
- Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport
- Social Work
Provost Mike Licari says the school trains students to work in high-demand fields that will continue to grow in the future. "We have a great opportunity here, in terms of expanding our capacity, expanding the sophistication of our facilities, to really play a humongous role in meeting that demand."
The project still needs approval from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, the State Budget Agency and Governor Mike Pence.
Indiana State University Provost Mike Licari says the project will help better educate students to fill positions that are in “great demand.”
