Several fire departments throughout the state have been awarded federal funding. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program supports departments throughout the country on initiatives including facility modifications, additional protective equipment and wellness and fitness initiatives. The Indiana recipients are Terre Haute, Lake Station, Pike Township in Marion County, South Bend and Decatur Township in Marion County.

The grant initiative is a partnership between the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Senator Joe Donnelly says "every day, Hoosier firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians work tirelessly, at personal risk, to protect families across the state. I’m pleased these fire departments have been awarded federal grants that will support our firefighters as they serve our communities, and I’m proud to support this important program at the federal level."

Details of the Indiana grants are:

Terre Haute Fire Department – $283,576 for facilities modifications

Lake Station Fire Department – $204,820 for personal protective equipment

Pike Township Fire Department – $150,819 for wellness and fitness programs

South Bend Fire Department – $15,910 for facilities modifications

Decatur Township Fire Department – $14,728 for wellness and fitness programs
