The U.S. Department of Education has awarded more than $2.8 million to IUPUI to continue a college readiness program for low income high school students. The funding will renew the Upward Bound program for five years. IUPUI is one of eight federal TRIO programs to receive the support.

Upward Bound involves students at five Indianapolis Public Schools high schools and Warren Central High School on the city’s east side.

IUPUI Upward Bound Director Roxanne Gregg says "we work not only with students, but also with families and the communities where the families reside. A lot of times, people don’t understand what it takes to go to college, all the little hidden languages that are involved. What we do is unpack that." About 70 percent of participants are African-American, 20 percent are Hispanic and 10 percent are white or multicultural. It involves living on-campus in the summer while taking courses, receiving college planning and preparation assistance, touring campuses and being offered mentoring and internship opportunities.
