Eyeglass Lens Maker Closing Plymouth Facility

A subsidiary of Texas-based Hoya Vision Care North America has announced plans to close its facility in Plymouth. In a notice to the state, Hoya Optical Labs of America Inc. said the closure will affect more than 80 employees.
Hoya did not provide a reason for the decision to close the plant, which is expected to be permanent. The layoffs are scheduled to begin October 4 and occur in phases until the plant closure is complete on March 2. The company says the gradual pace will allow it to transfer work to other Hoya locations.
The affected employees were notified of the planned closure this week. The employees are represented by a union and do have bumping rights based on the collective bargaining agreement.
Hoya Vision Care, according to its website, manufactures a variety of eyeglass lenses. The closure was detailed in a notification under the Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN notice, to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
