Indianapolis-based Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana has announced plans to open its newest Excel Center location next month. The Decatur Township location is Goodwill’s sixth Excel Center in Indianapolis and 13th in the region.
The Excel Center is a tuition-free adult high school that, since 2010, has graduated more than 3,000 students. The school provides adults with the opportunity to complete their high school diploma and prepare for postsecondary pathways.
Goodwill cites figures from the U.S. Census Bureau which says more than 15 percent of Marion County residents over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma. Betsy Delgado, vice president of mission and education at Goodwill, says the new Decatur Township location will allow the organization to serve more families in Marion County.
Goodwill has named Sylvia Lane director of the new location. Lane has been involved with Good Will and The Excel Center for the past five years.
Earlier this year, The Excel Center graduated its 3,000th student and Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana Chief Executive Officer Kent Kramer spoke with Inside INdiana Business last month about how the adult high school model is spreading throughout the country.
