The founder of the Dunes Volleyball Club in Rolling Prairie has announced plans to build a recreational center in La Porte. If approved, construction on the $2.3 million Dunes Event Center could begin this fall.
The 50,000 square-foot facility will have a focus on youth and adult volleyball, but will also include batting cages, basketball courts, soccer fields, and event space, according to the Greater La Porte Economic Development Corp. It will be located in the NewPorte Landing development.
The land is currently owned by the La Porte Redevelopment Commission, which is set to discuss property acquisition at its next meeting August 30.
The La Porte City Council has approved Rick Ashmore’s request for tax incentives for the project. GLEDC Executive Director Bert Cook tells Inside INdiana Business the incentives amount to 65 percent real property tax savings over 10 years.
"This project is a great example of multiple parties, both governmental and private working together to achieve a common goal," Cook said in a news release. "Rick Ashmore and his team have been committed to making this project a part of the greater NewPorte Landing Redevelopment Area and both the La Porte City Council and Redevelopment Commission have worked to make that a reality. I am really excited to see this project come to life."
La Porte Mayor Blair Milo says the facility will bring more tourism to the city. The project is expected to be complete in spring 2018.
