The Erskine Green Training Institute in Muncie has been awarded a $170,000 grant from the Fort Wayne-based AWS Foundation. The funds will support scholarships and increased outreach in northeast Indiana. EGTI is housed at the Courtyard Muncie, and provides vocational training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
The foundation helps children and adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities live as independently as possible.
AWS Foundation Chief Executive Officer Patti Hays says "we are pleased to provide scholarships and help spread the word about this first of its kind program – available right here in Indiana. The training programs offered by EGTI provide real-life job and life skills needed for individuals to compete in the job market and increase employment opportunities. With today’s high demand for skilled workers, this program greatly benefits both individuals with disabilities that are seeking employment opportunities and employers statewide."
The Arc of Indiana, which established the institute, says more than 80 percent of graduates have secured jobs. "We greatly appreciate the support of AWS Foundation. EGTI will soon complete its second year of operation. During these first two years, the lives of our students have been transformed," said The Arc of Indiana Foundation Executive Director Andy Kirby. "With the support of AWS Foundation, we look forward to continuing to grow our program and supporting individuals with disabilities in making their dreams of gaining meaningful employment a reality."
