Elkhart announces new leadership at The Lerner Theatre

The city of Elkhart has named two veteran arts professionals to lead operations at The Lerner Theatre, signaling a new chapter for the historic venue amid its centennial celebrations.
Mayor Rod Roberson’s administration this week announced the appointments of Carl Thompson as general manager and Bob Garcia as director of events and finance, following what city officials described as a “highly competitive national search.”
“This was a deliberate and thorough process,” said Mayor Roberson in a statement. “We were committed to finding individuals with the expertise, passion and vision to uphold The Lerner’s legacy and to continue its growth in line with my administration’s priorities.”
Thompson joins The Lerner with more than 20 years of experience in the performing arts. He most recently served as marketing and programming coordinator at Palomar College in San Marcos, California, where he led campaigns that increased attendance through targeted advertising and outreach.
Thompson’s career also includes a 16-year tenure at The Nederlander Organization, where he advanced to director of marketing and business development for Broadway San Diego. His previous roles include general manager for regional touring divisions and director of marketing for Knoxville Opera, where he helped launch the Rossini Festival.

Bob Garcia brings over four decades of experience in the entertainment industry to his role. His career includes 17 years with Radio City Music Hall Productions in New York, where he led the finance division and line produced iconic events such as six Super Bowl Halftime shows and concerts for artists including Frank Sinatra and Madonna. He later served as vice president of entertainment finance at Madison Square Garden Co.
Garcia has also held leadership positions at several nonprofit theaters, including the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando, where he managed artist contracts and Broadway settlements.
The city of Elkhart said his experience spans both artistic programming and financial oversight, positioning him to help expand The Lerner’s offerings and operational capacity.
The dual hires come as The Lerner Theatre prepares to celebrate 100 years as a cornerstone of Elkhart’s cultural life. City officials say the appointments reflect a long-term investment in the venue’s future and its role in regional arts and entertainment.
