The college says the gift, like the one received in January 2017, will go toward student scholarships.
Earlham says the funding was delivered as a grant from Our Giving Tree, an account at the Chicago Community Foundation. The college will set up a scholarship fund in the account’s name, which will be used to support need-based financial awards given to students as part of their financial aid packages.
"We are deeply grateful for this wonderfully unexpected gift," says Earlham Interim President Avis Stewart. "Such generosity is a wonderful reminder of the many generous philanthropists that recognize the value of an Earlham education and the impact our graduates are having in communities across the world."
Earlham says 90 percent of its students receive some form of financial assistance, with $28 million in financial aid being awarded to students in the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Nearly 30 percent of all Earlham students are eligible for Pell Grants from the federal government.
