The Indiana Department of Workforce Development has laid off 123 employees as a result of recent budget cuts at the state and federal levels.
The agency confirmed to our partners at Fox59/CBS4 that the move is part of an effort to “remain fiscally responsible” in the wake of the cuts.
“The Department of Workforce Development experienced budget reductions at both the state and federal levels. As a result, operational adjustments were necessary to ensure we remain fiscally responsible in how we serve Indiana,” DWD said in a written statement. “The decision to reduce staff was made with great care and consideration. Our teams work with Hoosiers every day- including those navigating unemployment- and that perspective helped guide our decision-making process.”
The cuts include 18 administrative positions, 48 workforce program positions and 57 unemployment insurance positions.
It was not immediately clear what, if any, separation assistance is being provided to the affected workers. The DWD did not respond to a request from Inside INdiana Business for more information.
State agencies have been tasked with finding savings within their budgets as a result of a more than $2 billion shortfall in the state budget. More than 100 positions at the Indiana Office of Commerce and the Indiana Department of Education were being cut last month.
