The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry has awarded more than $250,000 in Volunteer Fire Assistance grants to more than 53 rural and volunteer fire departments throughout the state. The funds were made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

The DNR says the recipients were selected based on population density, acres of protected public wildlands and wildland fire reporting to the DNR. The funds will be used toward training, installation of dry hydrants or to purchase equipment to combat wildland fires.
