Anderson city leaders say any attempt to redevelop the Wigwam gymnasium must also include former classroom and vocational education areas in the complex. Our partners at the Herald Bulletin report discussions have included potential housing and public art space. A group of private investors earlier this month pulled out of a plan to take over the facility. Wigwam Sports & Entertainment LLC had hoped to revive the venue to host basketball and other events.

Economic Development Department Director Greg Winkler calls a deal a “long shot,” but says he is more optimistic than he was last week.

The Anderson Community School Corp. is giving the city's redevelopment commission until September 2 to take over the facility. If a deal is not reached, the administration has authority to sign contracts to demolish the gym.
