A revitalization project in Evansville's emerging arts district is moving forward. Evansville-based Architectural Renovators Inc. will invest more than $1 million into improvements to historic apartment buildings. The work is expected to be complete by next summer. August 28, 2014
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The office of Mayor Lloyd Winnecke is pleased to announce that the Evansville Brownfields Corporation Board of Directors has chosen Architectural Renovators Inc. as the successful bidder to renovate and restore the Maybelle and Montrose Apartment buildings located at 1012 SE Second St. in the Haynie's Corner Art District. As the mayor announced at a June press conference, the city will be investing additional funds in this key historic revitalization area to assist the neighborhood in its rebirth as a vibrant area for restaurants, retail, art and housing.
The long vacant apartment buildings, built in 1919, were acquired in 2012 by the Evansville Brownfields Corporation for the purpose of restoration. With an investment of more than $1 million in private funds, developer Michael Martin, owner of Architectural Renovators, plans to renovate the existing 12 units and create two additional apartments. This represents a significant milestone in the near downtown area. Martin has successfully completed renovations of other historic multi-unit residential buildings, including the Euclid and the Audubon, which are fully occupied. Martin advised the board at their meeting today the first units should be available for lease by summer 2015.
In addition to this major announcement, the Evansville Brownfield Corporation board is also pleased to announce that demolition of the former drug store building adjacent to the apartments will be completed within the next 60 to 90 days. This demolition will clear the way for additional mixed-use retail/residential development of the corner, which is the focal point of the Art District.
