Demolition work on the site of a planned $30 million mixed-use development in downtown Jasper is underway. The River Centre project, which is been in the works for more than a decade, will ultimately feature an 80-room hotel, 75 apartment units and 36,000 square feet of retail and office space.
City officials, including Mayor Terry Seitz, were on hand Friday to begin demolition of portions of the former Jasper Cabinet manufacturing plant. The redevelopment is being led by Jane Hendrickson of Indianapolis-based Boxer Girl LLC. The hotel, which will be located on the site of Jasper Cabinet’s "kiln building" is being developed in partnership with Indianapolis-based General Hotels Corp.
"Our city is in high gear right now and because of our vision and planning we’ve been able to create numerous partnerships," said Jasper Mayor Terry Seitz, "It is truly a team effort for a capstone project."
The property has been vacant for more than 15 years. The city did not give a time frame for the project’s completion.
Seitz says other partners in the project include local legislators, the offices of Governor Eric Holcomb and Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, Indiana Economic Development Corp., the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Indiana Environmental Management, the United States Army Corps of Engineers and various city offices and boards.
