A Carroll County community is hoping millions of dollars in investments will help it become a tourist destination. Delphi Mayor Randy Strasser says the construction of the Hoosier Heartland Corridor has created a “sense of urgency” for the city to give people reasons to get off the highway and visit the community. During an appearance on Inside INdiana Business Television, he said access to funds from being named a 2012 Stellar Community will enable additional upgrades to the Wabash and Erie Canal and the restoration of the Delphi Opera House. A DK Shifflet and Associates study in 2006 estimated tourism brings more than 62 million visitors to Indiana each year with an annual statewide economic impact of more than $10 billion. Strasser says Delphi would “like to have our piece of those tourism dollars.” The city is branding itself with a tagline of “Storied past, stellar future.”

He says the 2012 Stellar Community designation has allowed the city of 3,000 people to “have the next 50-75 years laid out in front of us.” Strasser estimates the community will see approximately $50 million in improvements over the next five to six years.
